5 Grounding Techniques for Panic Attacks and Racing Thoughts

A panic attack can make you feel as if you are losing control or unable to breathe. In those intense moments, intellectualizing does not work because your sympathetic nervous system is on high alert.
Here are five somatic grounding exercises to reset your nervous system:
1. The 5-4-3-2-1 Sensory Method: Acknowledge 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste.
2. Box Breathing: Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale slowly for 4, hold empty for 4. Repeat for 4 cycles to stimulate the vagus nerve.
3. Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR): Tense your shoulder muscles for 5 seconds, then deliberately release and notice the wave of relaxation.
4. The Cold Water Reset: Splash cold water on your face to activate the mammalian dive reflex and gently slow your heart rate.
5. Grounding Feet Anchor: Press both bare feet firmly into the floor, feeling the solid surface supporting your weight.
